EU now allows insect-derived proteins in poultry and pig feed

Last April, the EU already voted positively for the use of insect proteins in poultry and pig feed. In August 2021, the authorization of the use of processed animal proteins derived from insects (insects PAPs) in poultry and pig feed was finally completed. The use of insect proteins in aquaculture was already authorized since 2017.

This authorization is a big step forward to a circular food system. Insects grow very well on organic waste streams. In this way, insect breeding is a sustainable solution to clean up organic waste, and they can serve themselves as high-quality animal feed.

Insects are a natural food source for poultry and pigs. Furthermore, they are high in protein, which reduces the dependency on other protein sources that are often connected to deforestation and overfishing.
